Mother of the Oceans: Elisabeth Mann Borgese and Ocean Governance
OBS! NY DATO OG TID FOR DETTE ARRANGEMENTET ER 22. MAI, 11.15-13.00.
"Ever since its emergence in the late nineteenth century, as a response to the crises of industrialization and Empire, the field of International Relations has been a predominantly land-based field. The life and thought of Elisabeth Mann Borgese challenges this ‘hangashore’ approach to global politics. Through her writings and participation in the UNCLOS III negotiations, Borgese confronts our ignorance of the Oceans, suggesting that the maritime world that makes up 71% of the Earth’s surface plays important roles in global politics.
The seminar is organized by the REGEND (Re-gendering Diplomacy) project funded by the Research Council of Norway under grant 335381.
Lucian M. Ashworth is professor of political science in the Memorial University of Newfoundland, where the influence of the Ocean is never far away. His main area of research interest is the history of international thought, and he has published widely on this subject. His last publication was on re-reading Sartre's Roads to Freedom trilogy as an IR text, for which a blog summary can be read here."
