This month, 27 countries participated in the world’s biggest multi-country vote. The result indicated a clear shift to the centre-right and nationalist parties, reflecting broader changes in the poltical landscape across Europe. What will be the outcome of the right wing wave, and what does it means for the state of democracy in the EU?

This election was in particular a huge defeat for French President Macron’s party, La République En Marche. In response, Macron decided to dissolve the Assamblée Nationale and annouced a snap election, scheduled for the end of this month and beginning of July. Why did did Macron make this strategic gamble and what will France look like if Rassemblement National gains a majority with their allies? Could a potential cohabitation with a prime minister from the far right work with Macron’s party?

In the podcast episode you’ll hear from Guri Rosén, (Associate Professor, at the department of political science at Univeristy of Oslo and has headed the secretariat for the EEA-commission at ARENA Centre for European Studies) and Christophe Hillion (Research professor at NUPI as well as Professor of European Law at the University of Oslo).

The conversation is hosted by NUPI Research Professor Pernille Rieker who is also the head of NUPI Center for European Studies. This conversation is a part of the Norway and the EU towards 2030 project.
