After 30 years of fending off cyber attacks, what can we say of how nations try to defend themselves?  These remarks will focus on individual, institutional, and national actions across a range of defense and prevention to mitigation and response.  The overall conclusion is that today, nations devote more effort to responding to attacks rather than preventing them in the first place. Sulmeyer has written several articles on cyber, read two of them here and here.

Michael Sulmeyer is the Director for Belfer Center's Cyber Project at Harvard Kennedy School. He is also a Contributing Editor for the national security blog Lawfare. Before Harvard, he served as the Director for Plans and Operations for Cyber Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Sulmeyer received his PhD (DPhil) from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar, his M.A. in War Studies from King's College London, and his B.A. and J.D. from Stanford University. His latest article is about how cyber capacities can, and should, be integrated in the planning of conventional military operations.

This event is hosted by NUPI's Centre for Cyber Security Studies. The centre seek to bridge the gap between the technical community and the policy world with research focusing primarily on the political dimension of cybersecurity.
