Intelligence and oversight in a world of complex threats
Since the turn of the millennium, intelligence agencies have been operating in a tense and rapidly changing security environment. Terror threats have become more complex, such as those caused by the rise of Islamic State. The East-West climate has cooled following Russia’s intervention in Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. Moreover, the large-scale intelligence collection and intrusive surveillance practices revealed by Edward Snowden pose new challenges.
On 17 October, Professor in Law, Ian Leigh and Senior Research Fellow Njord Wegge (Eds.) will launch their new book: Intelligence Oversight in the Twenty-First Century. Accountability in a Changing World (Routledge, 2018).
The book addresses the impact of above factors on security and intelligence agencies in a range of countries, together with the challenges that they present for intelligence oversight bodies to adapt in response. With chapters surveying developments in Norway, Romania, the UK, Belgium, France, the USA, Canada and Germany, the coverage is varied, wide and up-to-date.
The presentation of the book will be followed by debate and comment from scholars and experts in the field.
