Fisheries Resources Management in tomorrow’s Indonesia

Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia, Ms Susi Pudjiastuti, visits NUPI to talk about how the country will handle the severe challenges it faces in the years to come regarding national food security.

Indonesia has the second longest coastline in the world, and close to 100 million people live near the coast. Fisheries are an essential source of food, income, and cultural heritage to Indonesia’s people, as well as essential in national food security and nutritional health. At the same time, Indonesia faces severe challenges of sustainability due to degradation of critical marine habitats and non-fishing stressors such as climate change.

With Minister Pudjiastuti, Indonesia has launched a new policy based on three pillars: Sovereignty, Sustainability, and Prosperity. The policy aims to manage oceans as the future of the Indonesian nation, including combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.

In addition to Minister Pudjiastuti's talk, Gunnar Stølsvik from the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, will talk about how Norway and Indonesia are cooperating on the battle against fisheries related crime.

Ms. Susi Pudjiastuti serves as Minister at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) under President Joko Widodo’s 2014-2019 cabinet.
