description
South and Central America have had substantial economic growth over the last years. Social inequality still dominates the region, however.
South and Central America covers the southernmost part of the American continent as well as the southern part of Northern America from the Tehuantepec isthmus in the North and Argentina to the South. The countries have coastline both to the Pacific and to the Atlantic (the Caribbean) oceans. Over the last years, the region has had substantial economic growth, but is still dominated by poverty and social inequality.
Trade and economic development are the main topics of NUPI's research in South and Central American countries. In addition, we conduct research on how economic reforms take place and affect society in Cuba, how Brazil develops as a regional power and as an emerging power globally. Norway's relationship to the countries in the region is an important aspect of all our research.
