Radicalisation has been one of the most influential concepts in research and policy on terrorism and violent extremism over the last two decades. Sitting at the heart of globally prominent agendas on preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE), it has transformed the way researchers, policymakers, and societies more broadly think about terrorism and political violence and how to counter it. Studies on radicalisation have been among the fastest growing areas in terrorism studies and with more researchers being drawn to the field, it has also become increasingly multidisciplinary, with contributions from scholars rooted in a wide range of disciplinary and theoretical traditions.

This explosion of interests has produced significant new insights and approaches, but has also had its own changes and weaknesses. This seminar looks at where we are with radicalisation and counter-radicalisation research, and some of the key challenges and opportunities for moving forward this research and policy agenda. The seminar draws on the new Routledge Handbook of Radicalisation and Countering Radicalisation (Routledge, 2024), edited by Leena Malkki, Sarah Marsden & Joel Busher.

Joel Busher is Professor of Political Sociology at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, Coventry University. His research examines the escalation and restraint of political violence, mobilisation against minoritised groups, and the enactment and impacts of security policies.

Dr Sarah Marsden is Director of the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St Andrews. Her research seeks to understand engagement in, and disengagement from political violence, including efforts to prevent and counter violent extremism.

The seminar is hosted by the Consortium for Terrorism Research.

The event will not be streamed.

PLEASE NOTE: This seminar will be held at Salongen conference center, C. J. Hambros plass 2D, Oslo (same building as NUPI, but on the 1st floor).
