Humanitarian aid in Syria: The role of the UN and the great powers
NUPI is pleased to welcome Muhannad Hadi who will give some answers to these questions. He will also address the international and Syrian political conditions for humanitarian aid in Syria and the neighbouring states.
In addition, we have also invited Cecilie Hellestveit and Pavel K. Baev to give their perspectives on the situation.
The conflict in Syria has been ongoing for more than ten years. It has caused enormous suffering for the Syrian people and created a deeply embedded humanitarian crisis which continues to worsen. At present, 13.4 million people in Syria are in need of humanitarian assistance, a 20 percent increase from 2020. The Syrian people continue to bear the brunt of the ongoing conflict.
Muhannad Hadi is the regional humanitarian coordinator for OCHA, the UN Syria response. He is central to the handling of several demanding humanitarian and political questions related to the Syria conflict. Several of these questions appear repeatedly on the UN Security Council agenda, including questions regarding the renewal of the soon to expire resolution on the humanitarian aid delivery mechanism for Syria, a work that Norway and Ireland are penholders for.
Covid-19: Although many have been vaccinated, the pandemic is not over. Please stay at home if you are ill/have symptoms of a respiratory infection. This applies to both vaccinated and non-vaccinated. The Norwegian Directorate of Health also recommends the use of face masks indoors if it's not possible to keep a meter distance to others.
