Energy security in Northern Europe and the Baltic region
The EU’s work with their new EU Global Strategy on Foreign and Security Policy is ongoing. An important dimension of this strategy concerns energy and energy security.
After the 2004 EU enlargement, the political and institutional / regulatory landscape of the Baltic region changed with respect to energy and energy security. In addition, the armed conflict in Ukraine has put the issue of energy security and security in general very high on the European political agenda.
How does the regional distribution of energy resources and energy policies contribute to altering the level of energy security in the whole region and in particular countries? How do actors address energy security concerns by cooperative policies, in particular, EU wide and sub-regional (Nordic, Baltic) coordination measures aimed at managing energy interdependencies and increasing energy security? How will the new European Energy Union impact energy security efforts?
