In 2004, the African Union’s (AU) then Commissioner for Peace and Security, Said Djinnit, argued that “No more, never again. Africans cannot watch the tragedies developing in the continent…”.

While the newly-constituted (2002) African Union adopted an ambitious policy in the field of peace and security twenty years on, against this backdrop, recent trends suggest an increasing numbers of violent conflict and the spread of terrorism and criminal and transnational violent conflicts. Additionally, the continent is setting its sights on a future shaped by a young population, rapid urbanisation, climate change, growing digital capacity, regional cooperation, and entrepreneurial innovation.

Nevertheless, Sub-Saharan Africa, is still home to 30 per cent of the world’s critical minerals, is on the brink of a major transformation with the global move towards clean energy. In order to utlise Africa’s resources for itself, peace in Africa must be sustained and advancing beyond exporting raw materials to developing processing industries presents an even larger opportunity. Unlocking the power of Africa’s people is fundamental to achieving a brighter future for its citizens — and to advancing global economic growth and development.

To discuss these issues and more, partners making up the Training for Peace programme will discuss the evolving nature of the AU work to tackle many of these challenges and the AUs step to implement the African Peace and Security Architecture, and how this relates to the complementary African Governance Architecture.

During the event, partners making up the Training for Peace programme will also share reflections and expertise on pressing topics such as recent political developments, climate change, transnational conflict and terrorism and Africa's relationship with external partners.

This session will be hosted by TfP’s manager at NUPI, Dr Andrew E. Yaw Tchie.

Panellists and full program will be published soon!
